Baringo school giving hope to girls rescued from retrogressive culture

A mention of Chemolingot Primary School in Baringo County, many will think it is just like any other primary school but this is not the case.

The school situated in Nginyang’ Division acts a as rescue centre as it offers consolation to young girl who were rescued from the retrogressive cultures such as Female genital mutilation and early marriages.

The School which is both day and boarding has seen many Pokot girls find refuge with hope to fulfill their dreams.

According to the School headteacher Ms Florence Lomariwo, the primary school has become home for over 200 Pokot girls who abandoned their homes to avoid circumcision and early marriage.

However, the school despite being started by missionaries’ way back in 1975 still faces challenges of infrastructure.“We have a lot of challenges since the school still needs basics for the girls including bedding” she says.

The old dormitories are dilapidated with no doors and the girls and boys have no beds to accommodate them.

Ms Lomariwo says the population has increased to over 700 pupils with majority being girls hence support is needed to ensure that the pupils have a good learning environment.

The school has 13 dedicated teachers.

“The school since 2003 has been absorbing girls who have ran away from the retrogressive cultures such as FGM and early marriages.” says the Headteacher.

Despite the harsh conditions, already six girls have been able to continue with their studies up to University level.

Ms Lomariwo says hers is a calling and she will do all she can to ensure the dreams of the girls are achieved.

She is however appealing to all well wishers to join hands in supporting the school so that the dreams of the girls can be achieved.

“The beds which I got in this school are now worn hence need to support the school. The community should now embrace education for the girl child” says Ms Lomariwo.
