KFS in a collaboration with KMA to ensure more Forest cover

As a way of Increasing Foresty Cover in the country, The Kenya forest service-KFS will continue working together with the Kenya Timber Manufacturers association TMA towards achieving that.

TThis is according to KFS director General Emillio Mugo who says this collaboration will see more Forest cover ion the country.

He was speaking in Londiani, Kericho county after concluding a two days inspection tour of the KFS field activities in Nakuru, Baringo and Kericho counties.

The KFS Director said that Londiani tree nursery is one of the biggest tree nurseries that have been established in conjunction with the local community and other stakeholders.

“ 2.5 million seedlings that are currently in Londiani will be distributed in Nakuru , Kericho and Baringo counties in order to increase the forest cover. Most of the indigenous trees seedlings will be used to rehabilitated dilapidated forest areas in the three counties now that rains are about to come” he said.

He pointed out that KFS will soon take over the technical management of seedlings management in co-managed seedling bed in order to translate to high quality wood.

He said that TMA and KFS will continue to work together in order to ensure that forest cover is not exhausted.

On his part, TMA National chairman Benard Gitau said that they have embraced the spirit of discipline in order to ensure that forests remain stable.

He said that as an association they have had challenges of membership contribution hence the few constraints in carrying out their work.

The chairman said that next to the seedling bed with 2.5 million seedlings in Londiani, they have been allocated a separate space that will be able to produce 4.5 seedlings come next year.

He said that TMA members have come to learn that apart from cutting down mature trees, they have an obligation to plant new ones in order to ensure that the required 10% forest cover is realized.
